Meet Kristin.

Kristin Olds is a ceramic artist living, learning and creating on unceded Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country.

Her work invites us to connect with the story of the land, honouring the origins of clay and the elements of nature that come together to make her slowly crafted pieces possible.

Shaping simple forms and layering them with function, connection and beauty, Kristin crafts both wheel thrown and hand built pieces, finishing them with her signature wood ash glaze.

Kristin finds joy in weaving storytelling throughout her making process. In reciprocity, Kristin authentically shares the life lessons she receives from her practice; so that others too can learn and grow through the wisdom of clay.

Alongside her own practice, Kristin holds regular handbuilding workshops; bringing people together in community to share her knowledge on clay, connection and creativity.

Teachers and influence

Kristin began her ceramics practice in 2015. After years of playful education in community ceramics classes in both Sydney and Melbourne, Kristin took part in the studio program at Brunswick's School of Clay and Art (SOCA), learning under renowned ceramicists Shane Kent, Neville French and Kate Jones. She has since completed a residency in Ubud, Indonesia at Eclipse Pottery, and is grateful to have received wisdom from fellow ceramicists; Tantri Mustika, Janice Keen, Emma Rose and David Walker.

Kristin feels deep gratitude for her Mum, who nurtured her creative spirit from a young age.

Values

Kristin’s relationships, business practices and creativity are guided by her values.

AUTHENTICITY. Open and honest storytelling, warm invitations to see behind the scenes, embracing imperfections (of self and small-batch ceramics), self-reflection and lifelong learning.

SLOWNESS. Finding balance, spaciousness and ways to regulate the nervous system. Being gentle, graceful and patient. Grounding with (hands in) the Earth and honouring Nature’s timelines.

CONNECTION. Honouring the interconnected nature of the self, creativity, natural world, community and humanity. Inner peace, clarity and a shining North Star. Collaboration, local systems and cycles.

BALANCE. An ongoing art of graceful juggling. A commitment to listening, slowing down and finding the centre. Remembering that balance brings greater capacity for compassion and service.

RESPECT. Respecting the land and its Traditional Custodians through actions, acknowledgement, reparations and reciprocity. Taking responsibility as a unique member of family, community and humanity.

GENEROSITY. Being generous with time, love and knowledge. Sharing food, stories, creativity and conversation in ways that nourish the self, community and the Earth.

Each of Kristin’s slow crafted pieces invites you to hold a piece of our Earth in your hands.
